WASHINGTONOn Sunday, February 2, 2025, the Department of Justice notified the Acacia Center for Justice that the stopwork order issued on January 22, 2025, on four of its programs had been lifted following the temporary restraining order entered in the case of New York et al. v. Trump, No. 25-cv-39-JJM-PAS (D.R.I.), ECF No. 50.

Shaina Aber, Executive Director of the Acacia Center for Justice issued the following statement in response:

For decades, legal access programs have supported a fair and orderly immigration system by helping people in immigration proceedings better understand their rights and obligations. The stop-work order issued two weeks ago temporarily left vulnerable children, families, and individuals navigating legal rights and obligations in our country’s immigration system without access to basic legal information or representation.

We welcome the news that the stop-work order on Acacia’s legal access programs has been lifted. We will continue working alongside the Department of Justice to ensure that these critical services and bastions of due process are fully restored and our partners in the legal field can resume their work without future disruption or delay.

The Legal Orientation Program, Immigration Court Helpdesk, and Family Group Legal Orientation Program help families, children, and individuals better understand their rights and obligations before immigration court. The Counsel for Children Initiative provides legal representation to children in immigration proceedings.
