WASHINGTON Shaina Aber, executive director of the Acacia Center for Justice, issued the following statement in response to the Court’s order that the Trump administration could temporarily resume efforts to deport immigrants to third countries:

“The devastation and irreparable harm that will doubtless ensue as the administration is allowed to resume side stepping the basic due process rights of people it seeks to expel to third countries endangers all people who reside in the U.S. The decision to stay a lower court’s procedural safeguard requirements risks sweeping more people up a rapidly expanding deportation industrial complex that is increasingly being externalized over our borders in order to remove people from the purview of our judicial system where they can seek to vindicate constitutional rights. In recent months, even U.S. citizens have been deprived of due process protections and taken from U.S. communities by emboldened federal agents.

“As the government spends billions of taxpayer dollars on an increasingly chaotic and arbitrary enforcement apparatus that intentionally rips children from their parents’ arms and deprives families of basic legal information, a majority of Americans have made it clear that they reject these initiatives in favor of policies and programs that uphold and defend access to justice, fairness, and our shared humanity and dignity.”
