SACRAMENTOHortencia Rodríguez Sandoval, director of community partnerships and state and local policy at the Acacia Center for Justice, released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of Assembly Bill 1261 authored by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland):

“We thank Governor Newsom, Asm. Bonta and the California Legislature for standing with children by making AB 1261 law. This important measure recognizes that unaccompanied minors—children who arrive alone often fleeing persecution and danger—deserve support, protection, and care. By ensuring access to an attorney, California affirms that every child must have a day in court with an advocate by their side to seek safety and protection under the law. Whether they arrive alone or with family, every child deserves safety and should have every opportunity for protection.

“The government’s recent efforts to illegally deport Guatemalan children in the middle of the night and the federal lawsuit that followed, makes clear that legal representation can be life saving for children in harm’s way. With AB 1261, our state has taken a compassionate and just step forward, guaranteeing that the most vulnerable among us are not left without a voice.

“Acacia is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Asm. Bonta on this bill and we welcome continued partnership to ensure the state systems of protections remain integrated, coordinated, and strong.  At a time when immigrant communities are under unprecedented attack, California must continue to act decisively and continue to invest in proven systems of support.
