Visuals for Learning About the Immigration System
At Acacia, we believe young people navigating the immigration system have the right to clear, accessible information and should be actively involved in decisions about their lives. In collaboration with artist Minnie Phan, we’ve developed a series of visuals to help advocates explain key legal concepts about the immigration process to the young people they represent. These visuals aim to equip young people with the information they need to understand their rights and options within the immigration system.
The deportation process can be overwhelming, especially for young people unfamiliar with the legal system. These visuals address common questions and concerns:
- Applying for Asylum at the Immigration Court Versus the Asylum Office – This visual outlines the differences between applying for asylum through the immigration court and the asylum office.
- The Long Wait from a SIJS Petition to a Green Card – This visual uses the metaphor of waiting in line at an ice cream shop to explain the SIJS backlog and the expected wait time for a green card after filing a Special Immigrant Juvenile petition.
- Different Paths to Work Authorization and Legal Status – This visual compares common pathways to obtaining a green card, including estimated timelines for obtaining work authorization and legal status.
These visuals are available to download for free to advocates nationwide. Each includes explanatory text on the reverse side to guide advocates’ conversations with their clients. While these visuals can be used remotely, they are most effective in person.
